Xenoblade Chronicles X is an action role-playing video game developed by Monolith Soft and published by Nintendo. Part of the Xeno series of video games, it serves as a spiritual successor to Xenoblade Chronicles on the Wii. The game centers on the player's customizable player character, and main characters Elma and Lin Lee efforts to survive and coexist with the indigenous creatures on a hostile alien planet while striving to protect humanity.

Known Issues

Brightness is too high

Sound issues

  • Music and voices are too low compared to other sounds. Music volume can be adjusted with this workaround.
    • If this issue was an emulation error, it has been fixed by Cemu updates. However, I'm leaving the link since it is still useful, as there are no audio setting in-game.
    • Voices being overpowered by the comparatively louder music during cut scenes was a common issue in the original game on the Wii U.

Softlocks/Crashes

  • When selecting the manual from the in game menu, you will be taken to a FrontierNav background page that is empty. There is no way to get out of this screen other than restarting Cemu.
    • The graphics pack "Change Time from eManual" will instead open the change time menu when selecting the manual, preventing a softlock.
    • The manual can be viewed online on the official Nintendo website here.
  • When selecting "Return to title screen", the game may load infinitely.
  • When trying to send a friend a request to someone through the game, "Connecting. Please wait..." will be displayed indefinitely.
  • When joining an online mission from a recruitment notification, an error may appear.
    • This error might be in-game, in which case all is fine.
    • However it might also be a Cemu Err-Eula popup, which requires a restart of Cemu.
    • Sometimes this just crashes Cemu.
    • Sometimes it works fine.
  • Cemu may occasionally crash during long play sessions. This seems to be completely random. (May be fixed in 1.20.X, May be caused by multi-core)

Texture/Graphic bugs

As of Cemu 1.20.2, all graphics issues are resolved, except:

  • Some textures, primarily in NLA and on the foliage in Noctilum, will be corrupted or checkered at a distance.
    • For some reason this issue always goes away when you're close enough for the game to load the highest quality versions of textures. Because of this, the "Texture LOD Offset" graphics pack may help with this.
  • Light trails on cars and skells can randomly lag behind by a frame, causing small flickering.
  • The major flickering issue, mentioned below.

Screen-Wide Flicker

There is a major issue where the entire screen will flicker with a combination of vertex explosions and corrupted UI elements. The Cemu team has confirmed that they are working on this.

  • This issue is made worse and more common, but not caused by:
    • Certain in-game menus and UI elements
    • Resolution graphics packs
    • 60fps Patch graphics pack
  • It seems to be caused by some sort of scheduling issue. The appearance of this issue is linked to high CPU performance relative to GPU performance
  • It can be reduced or eliminated by:
    • Disabling mentioned graphics packs
    • Disabling UI elements through the in-game settings, especially the mini-map
    • Overclocking your GPU
    • Underclocking or otherwise limiting your CPU

Configuration

This game does not require non-default settings to run properly. Optionally, there are graphic packs available.

Notes

When installing DLC, you might want to skip content\0017, 0018, 0019, and 001a. These are load acceleration data packs for a disc version of the game with the duplicate data.

1.4.2b Windows 10 EUR Intel Core i7-4790k Nvidia MSI GTX 970 4GB Drakonas 15-25 Loads Most cutscenes run so slow they have to be skipped (press start and skip.. easy), once in the character select screen game looks mostly fine, except lighting and minute texture mapping issues, but it runs at 28-30FPS for me. However, once in-game it runs at about 15-23 FPS, fluctuating. Surprisingly, besides the character and enemy models flickering in and out of view, the environment looks very spot-on to the original. No major environment issues. The protagonist's face gets mangled easily, though Elma looks perfectly fine in the first scene. You have to be patient with loading screens, as the emulator struggles to load in tandem with the game it will seem to freeze. However, after a couple loading screens, I had alt-tabbed away from the game... while alt-tabbed away CEMU crashed.
1.4.2b Windows 7 USA AMD FX 8320 @ 4.4GHz AMD Radeon R9 390 Darkemaste 10-30 Runs 15-30fps in title screen, 15-30fps in cutscenes, 10-15fps in-game, many character model/texture issues, environment/background and weather looks decent. First cutscene still has to be skipped and is not played, following cutscenes play with improper audio and appear to maintain a stable fps for the most part. (either 15-20 or 25-30)

Now seems to consistently crash before the title screen when shader cache is present, remove/delete appropriate .BIN file in shader cache folder before loading the game to bypass this. (file name is same as SaveDir in Cemu's titlebar)

Game runs as if it was slowed down, but the in game time is sped up 3-4 times. Lighting is messed up, night time seems fine, but when it's day time everything gets extremly biright. Colors also seem to be a lot darker than they are on the console. I made it as far as to NLA without any crashes and I didn't play anything after that. Sound is next to unhearable, distorted and slowed down especially in the cutscenes. It is very difficult to enter the protagnoist's name, but it might just be me being stupid.

1.11.0c Windows 10 USA Intel Core i3 7100 @ 3.9GHz NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1050Ti Deddas22 30 Playable Runs pretty good on 1440p sometimes in battle the fps may drop little. You can play from beginning to end with no issues at all. Once a song finishes and loops again white noise will be played alongside the song, the end cutscenes will not be properly played only a green screen appears. Voices are too low to hear due high sound effects(it can be fixed, just google it) and also songs during cutscenes are really loud(i have tried to fix it, but with no luck.Bloom is way high in some areas, but it can be fixed with a graphic pack..
1.11.2 Windows 10 USA Intel Core i7 5930k @ 4.5GHz NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1080Ti Forkinator 30 Playable Runs well on 5k resolution. Fps stays at 30 as long as buffer cache accuracy is at low. You can play from beginning to end with minor annoyance issues relating to offline play. The known issues still persist in this version. Graphical bugs still exist such as purple and missing textures. Once a BGM song finishes and loops again white noise/crackling/static will be heard in the background with the song. Voices are still too low to hear due to high sound effects and music(see known issues).
1.11.2 Windows 10 EU Intel Core i5 2500k @ 4.3Ghz NVIDIA GeForce GTX 980 Robonator 30 Unplayable Runs well on 4k/5k. As Mentioned before, known issues still exist in this version, though black/missing textures aren't as common as they were in 1.11.1. Definitely one of the better running games.
1.11.5d Windows 10 EU Intel Core i7 7700K @ 4.5GHz NVIDIA GeForce GTX 960 XenoSpecies 30 Unplayable Game(AX5D01) crashes since CEMU v1.11.5d on file load.
1.11.6 Windows 10 USA Intel Core i5 6600K @ 4.7GHz NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1060 6GB TravelinJester 30 Unplayable Runs well at times, random hardlocks requiring task manager. Would stick to 1.11.3.

1.12.2d Windows 10 USA Intel Core i7-4770k Nvidia GTX 750ti abctoz 30 Playable Was unplayable after initial landing, constantly crashing every 1-5min, this fixed it basically use a program "Cheat Engine" and set the speed of Cemu to run at 1x speed(normal speed), somehow this fixes crashing. You can even increase the speed of the game to 1.5x or 2x - i have to test this more though, but its very stable now been running 2x in the background as i type this. that's my contribootion keep up the great work! EDIT - OK so prologue was outside and fine, inside NLA chapter one it crashed 3 times with CheatEngine on 2x speed, made it to chapter 2 have to save regularly.
1.12.2d Windows 10 USA Intel Core i7-6700HQ Nvidia GTX 1070 benny3t3 22 Runs I cannot say that this game is truly playable right now. It currrently does not have multi-core support which makes it limited by CPU power more than many games, and more importantly the audio is unreasonably unbalanced. That being said, the graphics are overall excellent, and I anticipate that the next releases in the coming month or so will fix whatever few graphical issues there are. The largest issue that is the majority of the reason why I currently consider this game not playable is the audio. I have heard others say that even on the Wii U the audio was unbalanced and it was hard to hear people, but I tried listening for it myself on the Wii U and it was just fine. There are serious audio level issues and audio noise that majorly degrades the gaming experience. Both that and the lack of multi-core support made it so I am not willing to play this game right now on Cemu, therefore I think it is safe to deem it not playable for now.

1.13.1d Windows 10 USA Intel Core i5-8600k Nvidia GTX 1070ti Iron Markus 30 Runs Constant audio crackling and texture glitches. Crashing constantly in sylvalum. The game is playable with crashing every hour until entering sylvalum. Once entering this area crashing becomes much more frequent. Crashes will happen within 1-2 mins in this area. Dual and triple-core recompilers are now supported but extremely unstable, using them will likely cause crashes in all areas in around 5 mins of game time.

1.15.0e Windows 10 USA Intel Core i5-2500k Nvidia GTX 1050ti Genisai 24-30 Playable Runs as well as 1.14.0c. Highly recommend using an already built shader cache; otherwise, loading up areas for the first time will be very painful.
1.15.1e Windows 10 USA Intel Core i5-7300HQ Nvidia GTX 1060 with Max-Q Design Griffion 25-30 Playable Very playable with a mostly consistant 30FPS, dropping by 1-2 frames every now and then, but hardly noticeable. Slight graphical issues of foilage flickering in and out, strange black square pattern only present in the vicinity of buildings in NLA, and screen goes slightly dark for a few seconds when time of day changes (might be in affect of NVIDIA Brightness graphics pack trying not to make the game too bright or dark). Have played for 24 hours with only 1 crash. Getting closer to perfect.
1.15.3b Windows 10 USA Intel Core i5-2500k Nvidia GTX 1050ti Genisai 24-30 Playable Runs a bit better than 1.15.0e. Audio seems to have improved a bit as well.
1.15.4b Windows 10 USA Intel Core i5-2500k Nvidia GTX 1050ti Genisai 24-30 Playable Runs a bit better than 1.15.3b. Other than the usual graphical issues, everything is working excellently.
1.15.5c Windows 10 USA Intel Core i5-2500k Nvidia GTX 1050ti Genisai 24-30 Playable This version introduces an odd graphical issue I can only describe as pink and white particles. I discovered this issue in Noctilum in certain areas. Fortunately, it's actually kind of pretty, rather than an annoyance.
1.15.7c Windows 10 USA Intel Core i5-2500k Nvidia GTX 1050ti Genisai 24-30 Playable This version (and possibly the previous version) has resolved the aforementioned particle issue. I've also noticed the presence of shafts of light that indicate where your quest is in the vicinity.
1.15.8 Windows 10 USA Intel Core i5-4690k Nvidia GTX 1070 tet666 24-30 Unplayable Severe artifacting in or anywhere near the city makes the game completely unplayable it's recommended to downgrade to 1.15.7c.
1.15.9c Windows 10 USA Ryzen 5 2600 Nvidia GTX 970 darkfall 28-30 Playable Mostly 30 fps with some drops.
1.15.10 Windows 10 USA Intel Core i5-2500k Nvidia GTX 1050ti Genisai 24-30 Playable Looks better than I've seen previously. Performance seems to have improved as well.
1.15.12b Windows 10 USA Intel Core i5-3570k Nvidia GTX 1060 fchud 28-30 Playable As far as i noticed, compared to 1.15.11c, this build introduced some issues:
  • FPS in BLADE Barracks drops to 16-20;
  • Lin's eyes became whole white w/o pupils.

Texture on particles from Follow Ball still broken.

1.15.19 Windows 10 USA Intel Core i5-2500k Nvidia GTX 1050ti Genisai 24-30 Playable Seems to be a considerable improvement over version 1.15.10 based on a quick run around the map.

1.16.1 Windows 10 USA Intel Core i7-9700 Nvidia RTX 2070 Griffion 30 Playable CONTAINS SPOILERS READ WITH CAUTION IF YOU HAVE NOT FINISHED THE STORY Having now played over 130 hours, there is no doubt the game is playable, but it is still not perfect with new artifacts being present that were not before. The black square pattern in the city mentioned in v1.15.1e is still present. Flashes of something flickering during controlled camera cutscenes. Some uncontrolled cutscenes briefly show nothing as if camera is out of position for a few seconds. Not exactly sure, but certain shiny effects such as the glow around your character when using an aura causes streaks of white across the screen. The same effect is most prevalent when switching to true form Elma, making her completely unusable. A new foilage issue, and again only seen in the city, is a white grass texture that flickers in and out and elongates up and down.
