Mario Kart 8 is a kart racing game and the eighth major installment in the Mario Kart series, developed and published by Nintendo for the Wii U. Like other games in the series, in Mario Kart 8, players control characters from the Mario franchise and participate in kart racing on various race tracks, using items to hinder opponents or gain advantages. While incorporating game mechanics originally featured in earlier Mario Kart games, Mario Kart 8 introduces anti-gravity sections that allow players to drive on walls or ceilings.
Configuration
- This game does not require non-default settings to run properly. You can install game updates and DLCs. Optionally there are graphic packs available.
- You are required to dump account files from your Wii U to play online in Cemu, a guide to do so can be found here.
- To enjoy Mario Kart 8 it's highly recommended to use Vulkan with async compile in order to compile shaders and pipelines fast without hurting game speed at all.
- Recommended settings:
Just keep cemu at default, meaning;
Game Profile -> CPU Mode: Auto / Multi-core recompiler General Settings -> Graphics: Async Compile (only applies if you are using the Vulkan API. Cemuhook: Not needed for this title, but if you have it, leave everything set to "default", including the QPC to "Cemu Default".
WiiMote Support
General input setup
Mario Kart 8 supports native usage of wiimotes and wiimotes with nunchucks attached.
They need to be set as the second, third, forth and fifth controller in Cemu's input settings, while the first controller is set to Wii U Gamepad in order to work.
Enabling MotionPlus will make the wiimotes not function correctly, and some wiimotes struggle to get the nunchucks to work.
Motion controls via wiimotes
You can steer the karts by holding the wiimote sideways just like in Mario Kart Wii.
This has to be enabled in-game, by starting a cup, hitting + on the remote to access the menu, then change the steering option.
Known Issues
Mii faces missing
- You need to dump the Mii data from your Wii U. The title ID is 0005001B-10056000.
Broken shadows on the racer select screen and on most tracks
There are broken shadows on the karts and drivers on the racer select screen and on most tracks, it is more noticeable in darker areas (i.e. Directly under a shadow, or the starting line in Water Park), and less noticeable in lighter areas (i.e. Outside the tunnel in Yoshi Circuit). This issue was tested with a GeForce RTX 3060 laptop GPU & on both OpenGL and Vulkan.
Crashing in bootcamp for Apple users
BootCampDrivers.com Adrenalin 18.12.3 V3 fixes the issue of not being able to get past the checkered flag. Tested and working on 2018 MacBook pro's with AMD Radeon Pro 560X
There is a flickering issue on 4-player multiplayer (flickering occurs in the top left an bottom left quadrants). Single-player and 2-player multiplayer are not affected.
