Mario Kart 8 is a kart racing game and the eighth major installment in the Mario Kart series, developed and published by Nintendo for the Wii U video game console. Like other games in the series, in Mario Kart 8, players control characters from the Mario franchise and participate in kart racing on various race tracks, using items to hinder opponents or gain advantages. While incorporating game mechanics originally featured in earlier Mario Kart games, Mario Kart 8 introduces anti-gravity sections that allow players to drive on walls or ceilings.

Known Issues

Crashes with Dual-core recompiler and above

  • The game will crash or freeze after finishing a race on the dual and triple-core recompiler. Use the Single-core recompiler to prevent this.

Crashes with GX2DrawDone() enabled

  • The game will crash or freeze during/after a race. Disable GX2DrawDone() to prevent this.

Mii faces missing

  • You need to dump the Mii data from your Wii U. The title ID is 0005001B-10056000.

Missing texts

  • You need a shareddata.bin dump from your Wii U to fix this. Alternatively, you can download Cemuhook and use sharedFonts.
  • Please note that the fonts aren't loaded correctly when starting up the game.

Broken/flickering textures on ground in certain courses on some Nvidia GPUs on some versions of Cemu

Crashing on title screen when on Fiji(R9 Fury) series and newer AMD GPUs

  • Driver 18.4.1 has solved this issue regardless of shader system on Polaris and Vega. Reports are needed for Fiji verification. Older fixes are listed below.
  • Crashes on title screen before the checkered flag appears. Fixed by reverting AMD drivers, the latest known driver to work is 17.11.1. (Alternatively the latest drivers, or any drivers past 17.11.1, can be used when using the Forza Demo workaround)
  • Another fix works with Cemu 1.11.6 for some AMD cards by turning off separable shaders (using conventional shaders instead). Tested driver version: Adrenalin Edition 18.3.4 with RX Vega 64 (*Further verification needed)

Crashing in bootcamp for Apple users

BootCampDrivers.com Adrenalin 18.12.3 V3 fixes the issue of not been able to get pass the checkered flag. Tested and working on 2018 MacBook pro's with AMD Radeon Pro 560X

There is a flickering issue on 4 player multiplayer (flickering occurs in the top left an bottom left quadrants). Single player and 2 player multiplayer are not affected.

Shadow issues

  • Cemu has some shadow issues in past releases (Cemu <= 1.11.5). These can sometimes be remedied by setting accurateShaderMul to true or min in the gameProfile and increasing the GPU Shader Cache Accuracy to Medium or High.

Configuration

  • This game does not require non-default settings to run properly. You can install game updates and DLCs. Optionally there are graphic packs available.
  • You are required to dump account files from your Wii U to play online in Cemu, a guide to do so can be found here.

There were a few random stutters with VSync on, so its best to disable that. I didn't see any graphical issues, although there was a bit of stuttering on the first lap of every race, but it didn't hurt gameplay much. Good experience overall. There was also a few random crashes, but it was extremely rare (I only experienced it twice over about 20 hours of gameplay).

I initially set the GPU buffer cache to High in the hopes that it would fix some missing text like in SSB4 on CEMU but that just ended up causing lag to the game, even on 1080p (the game would drop to 25 fps at its lowest, but no microstutter). With that set to Low, as well as the GPU forced to the GTX 1080 (my iGPU is a HD 630), framerate jumped to 60 and stayed there. However, H.264 as well as certain text is still broken without Cemuhook. Granted, I've only played Time Trials, but still a very good result.

In Time Trials, the first race I play usually runs at ~50 FPS, the second race runs at ~35 FPS, the third race at ~20-25 FPS and the fourth at ~12-15 FPS. This happens regardless of the order in which I play the tracks. The FPS keeps dropping after each consecutive race even in the Grand Prix. In the Grand Prix, the FPS is a bit lower than in the Time Trials because of the NPCs (the first race occurs at ~40 FPS).

Minor reflection and shadow problems in a few maps such as sky lights in "Super Bell Subway" and bad shadows and shadow flickering in "Big Blue". Picking up an item causes noticible stutter. Switching to conventional shaders (re-introduced in 1.11.6) from separable solved crash on startup.

Graphics Packs: 1920x1080, Higher Quality Shadows. CPU mode: Single-core Recompiler. Shader Type: Separable. Plays at a perfect 60 alone, the 45 fps drop was due to 2 player local split screen play. No noticeable slowdowns, stutter, or visual artifacts, even in Grand prix. Online plays as well or sometimes better than single player. The missing text and Mii faces are still present although.

If you can stand missing features that need authentic Wii U dump files... This game plays perfectly.
